Customer Value

  • Optical Design Capabilities
Optical design is performed using state-of-the-art computational hardware in conjunction with the latest simulator software. The optical design group encompasses the areas of detailed lens design, optical thin film definition and the assembly and alignment of prototypes, and optical testing.
  • Mechanical Design Capabilities
Our mechanical design department works closely with the optical and electronic design groups to ensure that the design of each product meets the physical, operational, and performance specifications. Production Engineering and Quality Assurance representatives are involved in the design process from the initial concept through to the final manufacturing drawings. The mechanical design group is divided into two main functional areas, one responsible for the design of pure lens systems and the other responsible for opto-mechanical assemblies.
  • FEA Predictive Design Capabilities
For some challenging design requirements, using FEA (finite element analysis) during the design stage, can improve understanding and predict effects on the system or critical parts due to thermal, vibration, gravity, pressure or stress. This understanding can be iterated back to optical design, in order to predict the effects on performance and suggest proactive measures. In addition, FEA capabilities, can be used to optimize materials and thicknesses in mechanical design, for critical aerospace weight savings, or precision opto-mechanical assemblies.
  • Electrical Design Capabilities
Raytheon ELCAN has facilities to design and test analog and digital hardware and software. Projects such as high performance servo loops for military optical data storage systems, laser scanning systems, and digital projection systems have been developed.

Discovering after you are heading for production that your drawings need major revisions to meet cost and performance goals, can be a real project killer.

Optical Design using High Performance Technical Computing

“The ELCAN people are exceptional: they understand optics; they understand design; they understand manufacturing; and they understand high quality...their engineers are helping our engineers think about application-specific uses.”
